Laser and Microwave Weapons: Shaping the Future of Defense
Thinking About the Future of Warfare
Research Questions
01. Networking
How do we cope with the growing complexity of networks and our limited understanding of their interactions?
02. Flash Wars
In the future, how can we ensure that autonomous systems on opposing sides don't interact in a way that could escalate to war?
03. Cyber Domain
How can we enhance cyber security within the military industrial complex?

Researcher
Emil Knutsson
My research investigates the increasing use of consumer drones in military contexts, with a particular focus on their role in the Ukraine conflict and the supporting technologies like artificial intelligence. Additionally, it addresses the ethical implications and broader consequences of granting enhanced autonomy to weapon systems.
Projects
Analyzing Strike Drone Footage From Ukraine
The focus of the project is to gather videos of FPV strike drones in use by Ukraine and Russia. Then create an excel data set of where the drone hit a target, its effect, and malfunction rate of the weapons platform.
The goal of the project is to understand how FPV strike drones are being used and gather potential insights from a rigorous data set.
LLM Generated Honeypots
This research aims to evaluate the feasibility of using Large Language Models (LLMs) to create scalable and undetectable honeypots. The current challenge is scaling honeypots without making them obvious to attackers, hindered by the scarcity of specialized IT security personnel. LLMs offer a solution by potentially creating unique, hard-to-identify systems. The initial phase uses an NVIDIA RTX 3090ti and Debian to have the LLM generate insecure C++ programs with exposed ports to attract attackers. The main hurdle is expanding this to simulate a real corporate IT network by training the LLM to generate interconnected honeypots that mimic authentic business infrastructure, requiring a dataset that encapsulates realistic yet vulnerable systems and their interactions.
About IFRW
Values
AI promises transformative enhancements to military capabilities. It is essential that western militaries adopt the technology. However, the humanitarian and ethical considerations with giving weapons increased autonomy cannot be ignored. IFRW is committed to researching a balance.
Vision
IFRW envisions a future where robotic technology plays a critical role in the defense industry, helping to keep our soldiers safe while ensuring mission success.
